The Fire of Warwick was a major conflagration that swept through Warwick on 5th September 1694 and lasted six hours. The fire started when sparks from a lighted taper blew onto the thatched roof of one of the houses opposite the Lord Leycester Hospital.

Many of you joined the excellent zoomed talk on the Great Fire of Warwick, given by Dr. Gillian White on 26th March. Whether you were part of that audience or not, you now have the opportunity to follow the route of the fire on a walking tour with Sue Rigby. Apart from being a member of our own Society, Sue is also a volunteer with 'Unlocking Warwick' (check their website) She devised the Great Fire Walk at the suggestion of a member of Heritage and Culture Warwickshire as an offer for last year's Heritage Open Days, and has given this walking tour on several occasions since then. I'm very grateful to Sue for offering to put on a walk specifically for our Society in early September.

We also hope to be joined by Steven Wallsgrove, who will tell us about some of the stories contained within contemporary documents of the time. We will have the chance to look at these documents in the Courthouse in Jury Street following the walk. The walk and document viewing lasts approximately 90 minutes in total.

Numbers will have to be limited, due to the logistics of moving a group of people along the route combined with social distancing. Sue will have a partner guide and has stipulated a maximum of 15 people per group, so there will be a total of 30 places available. The Guides will wear head microphones and the walk will be along pavements. Participants need to be aware there are not really any places on the duration of the walk for more than a few people to sit down at any one time.

The cost will be £5 per head and places are limited to members only.

If you are interested in joining the walk, please complete the form below.

Kind regards, Brad
